Menopause is a big transition and you’ve got so many different choices about how you want to deal with it. With this in mind, this week I’m talking about where you should go for help.
Around 25% of lucky women don’t experience any menopausal symptoms at all, but others, at the other end of the spectrum, have a terrible time. So you need to do something, or most of us need to do something. Here are a few of the choices you have…
Google it: You can try and help yourself but going on Google and hunting for information about dealing with menopause yourself. The reason I don’t advise this is because there’s so much research and so many people who would like to have you believe in what they’re saying because they have a vested interest.
Visit your GP surgery: You can get some help from your GP and your practice nurse. From my experience, they’re going to be telling you about hormone replacement therapy and other drugs, because they’re not particularly educated about the non-drug approach to menopause. Some like to take hormone therapy, but others don’t because of the side effects. Sometimes you can get worsening headaches, migraines, and we found in our study that very often women gain weight.
The first line approach: The first line approach is to change your diet by making sure its nutrient dense by adding naturally occurring oestrogen into your diet, taking supplements that are scientifically based and have been shown to be safe and effective, and doing some daily form of exercise and relaxation. These five tried and tested ways can get your symptoms completely under control without having to resort to drugs and hormones.
I’m not here to preach about which option is best for you, but I believe the natural approach has worked best and is most beneficial for most of my patients.
Make sure you feel happy about how you’re going to transition the menopause and just get as much sound information as you can and do what works for you. This is your journey. It’s up to you how you get through it.
